Mary Boice started South Coast Volleyball Club in the South Bay with one boy’s team in 1991. At that time there was just one other boys volleyball club in the beach area and it only had one 14 ’s division team. The local high school players were forced to travel out of the area to find a club team. By 1994 South Coast had nearly eighty boys playing on eight teams, ages 13 through 18. “When I was growing up in Hermosa Beach and attending Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach everyone played volleyball at some level. It was not as organized as it is today. As a family, our lifestyle revolved around beach time. Then, my nephew started playing club volleyball in Santa Barbara. We went to a tournament to watch him and I thought if my son were playing too, we would have more family time together.” Mary’s son Matt a member of the Mira Costa High School 1996 National Championship team and the 1997 MVP of Mira Costa High School, was a member of the Pepperdine University NCAA Finalist team in 1998 and is currently the Assistant Men’s Volleyball Coach at University of California, Irvine. Her nephew, Andy Witt won a National Championship with Stanford University in 1997 and played for the United States in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Both Andy and his brother Larry are currently ranked on the AVP.
